The drive to be more environmentally conscious is shaping consumer behaviour as never before. The food industry needs to boost its green credentials and step into sustainability to ensure that it keeps up with customer demand for responsibly-sourced food.
The role of palm oil
Palm oil has become one of the most urgent global issues facing the food sector. Both customers and stakeholders are increasingly aware of the environmental and social issues associated with unsustainable production.
Palm oil or ingredients made with palm oil are present across the food industry from oils, pastry products and desserts to breads and mixes. They are also in soap, detergents and cleaning products, turning it into a global commodity. High volumes of these products are used within the foodservice industry, which is why the food industry in particular can play a vital role in promoting sustainable palm oil production.
AAK, the global fats and oils business behind the Prep brand, is at the forefront of the worldwide drive towards sustainability. As a founder member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), AAK secured the first shipment of sustainably sourced palm oil into the UK back in 2008.
